“I don’t want to look fake, or plumped…”
These are commonly the questions and concerns we hear from clients when they talk about dermal filler.
Myth: “dermal fillers are artificial chemicals”
Fact: Wrong! Dermal fillers are comprised of Hyaluronic acid, a vital component that our skin uses to help build collagen with. This is why dermal fillers can help the skin appear more youthful and healthy as well as improving lines and sagginess.
Myth: “I’m scared I’ll end up looking like Leslie Ash!”
Fact: The dermal filler used at Barstable Medical Clinic is 100% biodegradable, so the body will degrade it over time (just like the way skin collagen is broken down by our body too). We do not use or recommend “permanent” fillers which cannot be broken down by the body. Unfortunately, Leslie Ash was treated with the non-biodegradable permanent form. The dermal filler used at Barstable Medical Clinic is all Juvederm (by Allegan), and lasts on average 9 – 18 months.
Myth: “I don’t want too much as I’m scared it will look too obvious”
Fact: 1ml of dermal filler is the same as 1 teaspoon of filler. Current experts in the field recommend starting with at least 3 – 4 mls. This sounds scary but 4 teaspoons used in the right way will not make you look fake or puffy. In fact, if you don’t have sufficient quantities it is possible the result will not be as good.
Myth: “I’m too young / old for filler”
Fact: Dermal fillers come in different thicknesses, and are used for different areas or problems on the face. Used properly, dermal filler can benefit all skin types and ages. For example, younger women look fresher after having cheek filler, and older ladies can have chin and jaw line treatment to help jowls.
Myth: “It is going to hurt too much”
Fact: All the dermal filler treatments we used at Barstable Medical Clinic have a numbing anaesthetic within them. This means that the treatment is only ever mildly uncomfortable. We can also start by applying a “numbing cream” to the skin first if necessary.
